Lost in Japan

The exhibition “Tales of Absence” opened its doors on September 29th, where The Lost World will be combined with the poetic imagery of Miyuki and the delicate, repaired objects of Nishiko. Set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful buildings of the Utrecht Monument Fund.

More about this collaboration here.

In collaboration with stichting OP& my exhibition “LOST WORLD” opened on the Nieuwegracht 205 in Utrecht on September 23th 2022. Photos of abandoned Japanese buildings are combined with the unique location of the sixteenth-century Refectiehuis.

Exhibition runs from 24 September – 9 October 2022
Open every Friday, Saturday & Sunday between 12:00-17:00

The first exhibition of The Lost World opened 18 May 2022 at the Ping Pong Club in Utrecht. Here the location of the deserted royal train depot was mixed with the poetic images of empty Japanese spaces.

Exhibition was open to the public five days a week up until 3 July 2022 and was well received.

ABOUT

The Lost World is the immersive exhibition accompanying the release of the photobook The Lost World. The exhibition  centers around seven images printed on large, illuminated pieces of fabric – accompanied by five prints on paper, the smell of these locations and a custom made soundtrack you can listen to on your headphones.

There’s a strong sense of mono no aware, the Japanese idea on ”beauty of transience”, throughout this project. The images and exhibition of Maan Limburg shed a light on this Japanese phenomenon, trying to relay to the viewer the magical feelings these places evoke.

Only memories of people live here: In the abandoned clothing in a closet, a set table and an overgrown car on the street. The question of why everyone left resurfaces with every image. The locations harbor beauty, nature and memories – but what value do these places still have in today’s Japan, which seems to put economic value above everything else?

In Shinto, one of the main religions of Japan, there’s this idea that every object and thing can have a soul. It is also in Japan you will now find an unimaginable amount of empty, deserted buildings and places. Maan’s exhibition and book subtly question the different forms of value found here.

To accompany the exhibition and the book we collaborated with audio-artist Paul Wienk to create a fitting soundscape.

It captures the feeling of these magically deserted places in a country that is not quite as desolate.

(And thank you Martine Mussies for the flute we incorporated!)
